1. The Reader\u2019s Question: Why Hebron?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

In 2 Samuel 2, David asks God:
\u201cShall I go up to one of the towns of Judah?\u201d<\/em> (CSB)
God\u2019s answer is clear: \u201cGo up.\u201d<\/em> Then He adds: \u201cGo to Hebron.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

But why Hebron? Many readers wonder about this. Let\u2019s explore the background.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

2. Theological Perspective \u2014 The Symbolism of Hebron<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Hebron did not appear out of nowhere. At that time, Hebron was located in the hill country of Judah, away from Philistine control, and served as a secure center for the tribe of Judah.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hebron also carried deep historical and theological significance:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  • It was where Abraham built an altar (Genesis 13:18).<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • It was the burial site of the patriarchs in the cave of Machpelah (Genesis 23).<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • According to Joshua 20, Hebron was a Levitical city and a city of refuge, symbolizing justice and order.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

    Thus, Hebron was already an important city for the people of Judah. Scholar Tsumura notes that Hebron was politically strategic\u2014close to David\u2019s hometown of Bethlehem, near the families of his wives, and ideal for uniting the clans of Judah.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Tsumura also points out that David\u2019s desire to seek God\u2019s guidance is significant (NICOT).
    The Hebrew text begins:

    The verb \u05e9\u05c1\u05d0\u05dc (sha\u2019al)<\/strong> means \u201cto ask, to inquire\u201d and is a formal expression for seeking divine guidance in Samuel (see 1 Sam 23:2; 30:8).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    David\u2019s question comes in two stages:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Walter Brueggemann contrasts this with Abner\u2019s political maneuvering later in the chapter, highlighting the theme of \u201ca king who follows God\u201d versus \u201chuman ambition.\u201d
      Robert Alter notes that the brevity of this oracle exchange underscores David\u2019s caution and God\u2019s sovereignty, creating a strong literary effect.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
