1. Let\u2019s Check the Passage<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

First, let\u2019s look at 2 Samuel 13:21 in the New Japanese Bible (2017 edition):
\u201cWhen King David heard about all these things, he was very angry.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

And that\u2019s it. We know David was angry, but what happened next? Did he take any action as king, or did he remain silent? Readers are left wondering.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

2. What the Septuagint (LXX) Says<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The Greek Septuagint (LXX) adds this:
\u201cBut he did not rebuke his son Amnon, because he loved him, for he was his firstborn.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Here we find the reason. David refrained from punishing Amnon because of his fatherly affection and because Amnon was the firstborn. In other words, David was angry but did nothing. Behind this inaction lay personal love and political calculation. This single sentence makes the story far more vivid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

3. Which Text Is \u2018Correct\u2019?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Modern Old Testament translations are based primarily on the Masoretic Text (MT), a Hebrew text standardized in the Middle Ages. The LXX, on the other hand, is a Greek translation made around the 3rd century BCE. Scholars now believe it may reflect a different Hebrew Vorlage (base text) than the MT.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The discovery of the Dead Sea Scrolls confirmed that the LXX is not merely a Greek translation but sometimes preserves readings from older Hebrew textual traditions. For example, in Samuel and Jeremiah, there are places where the LXX agrees with the Dead Sea Scrolls against the MT. This means the LXX may preserve forms of the text that the MT does not.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

4. Still, the LXX Is a Translation<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Here\u2019s the challenge: the LXX is a translation. So when we see an extra phrase, was it in the original Hebrew text, or did the translator add it as an explanatory gloss? We can\u2019t always tell. Determining whether an addition reflects an ancient Hebrew reading or the translator\u2019s interpretation remains an ongoing area of research.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

5. How Its Reputation Has Changed<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Historically, the LXX was highly esteemed in the early church. Augustine, for example, considered it an inspired translation. During the Reformation, however, Luther and Calvin insisted on returning to the Hebrew original, and the LXX became mainly a reference tool.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the 20th century, the discovery of the Dead Sea Scrolls changed everything. Scholars realized the LXX is an indispensable witness for textual criticism, sometimes preserving traces of Hebrew texts older than the MT.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

6. Global Research Trends<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

What about today? In Germany<\/strong>, LXX research is thriving. The Septuaginta Deutsch<\/em> project has produced a modern German translation with commentary, and the G\u00f6ttingen Septuagint remains the gold standard for critical editions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the UK<\/strong>, translations like the NRSV sometimes adopt LXX readings, especially where the MT seems problematic. Oxford and Cambridge scholars lead in textual criticism and translation theory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the US<\/strong>, projects like NET Bible and the NRSV include LXX readings in footnotes and occasionally in the main text. Because the New Testament often quotes the LXX, American scholarship emphasizes its theological significance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In Japan<\/strong>, translators generally prioritize the MT, but recent versions like the New Japanese Bible (2017) and the New Interconfessional Translation include LXX and Dead Sea Scroll variants in footnotes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
