12<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>1<\/strong><strong>\uff0e<\/strong><strong>What Are Manuscripts?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Today, we use copy machines to make copies quickly. But in the past, people copied texts by hand. These hand-written copies are called <strong>manuscripts<\/strong>. Because they were written by people, some manuscripts have small differences.\uff0e<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>2<\/strong><strong>\uff0e<\/strong><strong>What Is Textual Criticism?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The study of these differences is called <strong>textual criticism<\/strong>. It sounds difficult, but it\u2019s simple:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Textual criticism asks, \u201cWhich manuscript is closest to the original?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It helps us understand how the Bible was written and passed down through history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>3<\/strong><strong>\uff0e<\/strong><strong>A Special Case: 1 Kings Chapter 12<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Let\u2019s look at one example: <em>1 Kings Chapter 12<\/em>. In the <strong>Greek Bible<\/strong> (called the Septuagint or LXX), there is <strong>extra text<\/strong> that does not appear in the <strong>Hebrew Bible<\/strong> (called the Masoretic Text or MT).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This extra part is called <strong>verses 12:24a\u2013z<\/strong>. The letters show that many lines were added. These verses tell a second story about King Jeroboam.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>4. What Does the Extra Text Say?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the LXX, King Jeroboam is afraid that his people will return to the southern kingdom. So he makes two golden calves and sets them in Bethel and Dan. He removes the Levite priests and chooses ordinary people as new priests. The people accept this, but God is angry and sends a prophet to warn them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This story shows Jeroboam as a king who changes religion for political reasons.
