Who is Kelly Malone?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\nKelly Malone is an American missiologist and now a professor at Southwest Baptist University. From 1992, he served as a missionary in Japan for 15 years. He worked at Seinan Jo Gakuin University and the Christian Leadership Training Center (CLTC) in Tokyo, focusing on church development and theological education.
From this experience, he wrote the article \u201cDoing Evangelical Theology with the Japanese\u201d<\/em> (2009). The key word in the title is \u201cwith.\u201d<\/strong> It is not \u201cto the Japanese,\u201d but \u201cwith the Japanese.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n2. Why \u201cwith\u201d?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\nMalone asked an important question: \u201cIf we only teach Western theology in Japanese, will it really reach Japanese hearts?\u201d<\/em> His answer was No.<\/strong>
Why? Because Japanese Christian terms often carry meanings from Confucianism, Buddhism, and Shinto. For example, the word \u201ckami\u201d (god) usually means many gods in Japanese culture, but the Bible speaks of one God. This creates a gap.<\/p>\n\n\n\nMalone also noticed a problem: \u201ctwo-story faith.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n- Upper floor:<\/strong> Western idea of a transcendent God.<\/li>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhy does one man\u2019s death matter for everyone?\u201d For Japanese, the cross is hard to understand. Blood sacrifice sounds strange in Buddhist culture.
But Japan has the idea of honor and loyalty<\/strong> from the samurai tradition. Malone uses this: God\u2019s honor was damaged by sin, and Jesus acted for us to restore it. This is like Anselm\u2019s Satisfaction Theory<\/strong>, not Calvin\u2019s Penal Substitution<\/strong>, but it works as a starting point.
