This is how the Biblical Theology Movement (BTM)<\/strong> began in the mid-1940s in the United States.
The background includes the influence of Karl Barth and Emil Brunner, leaders of Neo-Orthodoxy. They stressed \u201cthe Word of God\u201d and saw the Bible not just as a historical document, but as the living Word of God.
Brevard Childs summarized BTM in his book Biblical Theology in Crisis<\/em> (1970), which made the name well-known.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
BTM wanted to read the Bible as one story of salvation, not as separate parts. It tried to combine historical-critical study with theological interpretation. The goal was to keep academic honesty and also help preaching and teaching in the church.
G.E. Wright\u2019s book The God Who Acts<\/em> became a symbol of BTM. J. Bright\u2019s A History of Israel<\/em> is another example, connecting biblical history with archaeology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Childs spoke of a \u201ccrisis,\u201d and later scholars moved toward canonical interpretation and more diverse readings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
After the war, Japanese seminaries learned from BTM. They used books like Bright\u2019s History of Israel<\/em> and Wright\u2019s archaeology studies. This encouraged reading the Bible together with ancient Near Eastern sources.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
But applying Western methods in Japan was hard. If we only translate Western theology, it may not touch Japanese hearts. Kelly Malone warned: \u201cExplaining Western theology in Japanese words is not enough.\u201d
Today, postcolonial studies ask: How did the Bible relate to power in history? This is important for Japan, which experienced war and colonialism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Uchimura (1861\u20131930) lived before BTM, but he also focused on the Bible and personal practice. Like BTM, he read the Bible in real-life situations. But he rejected historical criticism, while BTM used it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Evangelicals respected the Bible\u2019s authority and liked BTM\u2019s salvation-history approach, but they were careful about historical criticism. They used BTM ideas in schools but kept strong focus on faith and mission.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In Japan, churches try to read the Bible as one story of salvation and also translate it into Japanese culture. New approaches like postcolonial studies and narrative theology join the discussion.
We still ask: \u201cIs the Bible only an old record, or is it God\u2019s living Word today?\u201d<\/strong>
