Episode 34: \u201cBehind the Scenes of Bible Translation\u201d \u2014 Hezekiah, the Gihon Spring, and the Shadow on the Steps<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

When we read the Bible, we often glance over the \u201cnames,\u201d \u201cplaces,\u201d and \u201cevents\u201d without much thought. Yet behind each word lies the wisdom and painstaking effort of translators. Today, let\u2019s explore the hidden side of translation through three examples from 2 Kings: \u201cHezekiah,\u201d \u201cthe Gihon Spring,\u201d and \u201cthe shadow on the steps.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1. Hezekiah \u2014 Not Just Sound, but Meaning Matters<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The name \u201cHezekiah\u201d sounds dignified, doesn\u2019t it? In Hebrew, it is written \u05d7\u05b4\u05d6\u05b0\u05e7\u05b4\u05d9\u05b8\u05bc\u05d4\u05d5\u05bc (Chizqiyahu<\/em>), meaning \u201cThe Lord gives strength.\u201d
Translators wrestle with the question: \u201cShould we simply render the sound, or should we also reflect the meaning in the text?\u201d
The final approach is to keep the name as a transliteration, while explaining its meaning in footnotes or commentary. Why? Because it connects deeply to the Bible\u2019s overarching theme. Hezekiah was the king who defended his nation through prayer, and his name\u2019s meaning resonates with the heart of the story.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2. The Gihon Spring \u2014 More Than Just a Water Source<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Next, let\u2019s look at the \u201cGihon Spring.\u201d In Hebrew, \u05d2\u05b4\u05bc\u05d9\u05d7\u05d5\u05b9\u05df (Gihon<\/em>) means \u201cto gush forth.\u201d
Translators realize that if they treat it as just a place name, readers miss its rich background. This spring was Jerusalem\u2019s lifeline and the source from which Hezekiah dug a tunnel to bring water into the city. Therefore, the translation keeps \u201cGihon Spring\u201d as a name but adds notes explaining its meaning and historical significance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

3. The Shadow on the Steps \u2014 Why Translators Struggle<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Finally, consider the miraculous scene where \u201cthe shadow went back\u201d (2 Kings 20:11).
The Hebrew text uses the word \u05de\u05b7\u05e2\u05b2\u05dc\u05d5\u05b9\u05ea (ma\u2018alot<\/em>), meaning \u201csteps\u201d or \u201cstairs.\u201d This means Ahaz\u2019s \u201csundial\u201d was not a round modern clock but a stair-like structure. Here are three translation challenges:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  1. Using \u201csundial\u201d creates a modern image<\/strong> that obscures the original nuance.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  2. \u201cTen degrees\u201d is misleading<\/strong>\u2014the text actually means \u201cten steps.\u201d The English Standard Version (ESV) translates it as \u201cthe shadow went back ten steps,\u201d<\/em> preserving the stair-like concept.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  3. Who caused the miracle?<\/strong> The Hebrew does not say \u201cthe Lord moved it.\u201d It says, \u201cthe sun returned.\u201d Yet the context (see verse 10) shows this was a sign from God through Isaiah.
