The World of Pilgrims in Psalms 120\u2013134, the \u201cSongs of Ascents\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n When we read the Bible, we can easily follow only the words. Yet the people of the Bible did not live in a world of abstract ideas. They looked up at mountains, walked through the wilderness, passed through city gates, and made their way toward the temple. In a sense, then, the Bible is a book meant to be read within a landscape.<\/p>\n\n\n\n This is especially evident in Psalms 120\u2013134, known as the \u201cSongs of Ascents.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n Traditionally, these psalms have been understood as songs sung by pilgrims on their way to Jerusalem. But when we read the collection continuously, it seems to reflect not only the fact that pilgrims sang these songs, but also the world they saw along the way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Of course, we cannot say with certainty that these psalms record an actual pilgrimage route in sequence. Yet when we read them as a whole, a striking spatial movement emerges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Let us begin with Psalm 120, the first of the Songs of Ascents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The psalmist laments, \u201cI dwell as a foreigner in Meshech; I live among the tents of Kedar.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n Meshech was a northern region, while Kedar was associated with Arabian nomads. The two places were in fact far apart. For this reason, many scholars understand them not as a simple geographical description, but as symbols of a foreign or hostile world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n What matters is that the story begins not in Jerusalem, but far from the center of God\u2019s people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n There the psalmist says, \u201cI am for peace, but they are for war.\u201d The pilgrimage begins not at the temple, but in a world where peace has been lost.<\/p>\n\n\n\n In Psalm 121, the scenery changes. \u201cI lift up my eyes to the mountains.\u201d The pilgrim\u2019s gaze now turns upward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The words certainly carry symbolic meaning. At the same time, because Jerusalem is situated in the hill country, we can also imagine pilgrims literally looking up at the mountains as they traveled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Then Psalm 122 declares, \u201cOur feet are standing within your gates.\u201d At last, the pilgrims arrive in Jerusalem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n In Psalm 120, they were far away in a foreign land. In Psalm 121, they continued their journey while looking toward the mountains. In Psalm 122, they stand within the city gates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Read in this way, a single journey comes into view.<\/p>\n\n\n\n What happens next, however, is especially interesting. If the pilgrims have arrived in Psalm 122, the journey might seem complete. Yet in Psalm 123 their gaze rises once more: \u201cTo you I lift up my eyes, you who are enthroned in heaven.\u201d This time their vision reaches beyond Jerusalem toward heaven itself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n This collection, then, is not merely about geographical movement. It moves from a foreign land to the city, from the city to God, and from the outer world to the inner life. It seems to portray an upward movement of this kind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n In Psalm 132, Zion becomes the focus. Psalm 133 celebrates the unity of brothers, and Psalm 134 brings the collection to a close with worship in the temple.<\/p>\n\n\n\n In sequence, the movement appears as follows: a foreign land (Psalm 120) \u2193 the journey (Psalm 121) \u2193 arrival in Jerusalem (Psalm 122) \u2193 worship with eyes raised to heaven (Psalm 123 and following) \u2193 Zion (Psalm 132) \u2193 the fellowship of God\u2019s people (Psalm 133) \u2193 temple worship (Psalm 134).<\/p>\n\n\n\n Of course, this does not mean that the collection can be read as a map. Still, it is entirely possible that the editor had such spatial movement in mind when arranging these psalms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n There is something we can learn from this.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The Bible is not simply a collection of words. It contains places, landscapes, and human experiences. When we read while imagining where the people stood and what they saw, patterns may appear that we had never noticed before.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The Songs of Ascents are an especially good example.<\/p>\n\n\n\n They do not begin at the temple. They begin with lament in a foreign land, continue along mountain roads, express longing for the city, and finally lead into worship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n For this reason, the confession in Psalm 120\u2014\u201cI am for peace, but they are for war\u201d\u2014is not merely about trouble in human relationships. It is spoken by a pilgrim at the beginning of a journey toward the city of God.<\/p>\n\n\n\n When reading the Bible, we tend to focus only on what is written.
