1. Why learn in an age when AI can do so much?<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The rapid development of generative AI is forcing us to ask again what it means to learn. Writing, translating, calculating, and even programming are now tasks that AI can increasingly perform.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
So do human beings still need to learn these things? Until recently, we could say, \u201cWe learn them because we will use them in the future.\u201d But if AI can perform many of those tasks for us, that explanation is no longer enough.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Education in the age of AI must face not only the question, \u201cWhat can we do?\u201d but also the deeper question, \u201cWhy do we learn?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
2. \u201cCompleted\u201d and \u201clearned\u201d are not the same<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The important point here is that \u201cthe assignment has been completed\u201d and \u201cthe learner has acquired the ability\u201d are two different things.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
With AI, a student may obtain a polished report or an accurate answer in a short time. But that does not necessarily mean the student has read the materials, compared ideas, wrestled with the problem, or made judgments for themselves. A finished product may look excellent, while understanding and discernment have not yet been formed within the person.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The purpose of education is not merely the product itself. It also asks whether the learner is actually growing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
3. In education, taking the long way has value<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In the workplace, it is often desirable to achieve the same result more quickly. Education, however, is different.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Taking time to think, making mistakes, trying again, and discussing with others may appear inefficient. Yet through these experiences, people develop their ways of thinking and their character. Education does not aim simply at getting the right answer. What matters is the kind of person one becomes through the journey toward that answer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
4. Thinking about education from evangelical public theology<\/p>\n\n\n\n
By \u201cevangelical public theology,\u201d I mean a theological perspective that takes Scripture as the norm for faith and life and understands human beings as created in the image of God. From this perspective, education is not merely training in skills. It is the formation of persons who live responsibly before God and neighbor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The value of a human being is not determined by productivity or efficiency. Human beings possess dignity because they are created by God, addressed by God, and called to respond to God.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

5. AI is a good servant, but not the master<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Does this mean we should avoid using AI? No. According to the Christian understanding of creation, technology can be part of humanity\u2019s calling to cultivate and care for the world entrusted by God. AI may assist teachers, identify learning difficulties, and open educational opportunities to people who previously lacked access.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
What matters is that AI remain a tool and not become the one that determines our purposes. There are situations where AI should be used for efficiency. There are also tasks in which human beings must think deeply for themselves. We must not lose the ability to distinguish between the two. AI can become an excellent servant, but it must not become the master of human beings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
6. What should be formed in the age of AI?<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Evangelical theology pays attention not only to human potential but also to the reality of sin. We often absolutize convenience and surrender our responsibility to judge, saying, \u201cAI said so.\u201d That is why education in the age of AI requires more than technical skills.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
What is needed is wisdom to discern truth from falsehood, love that considers the impact on the vulnerable, humility to acknowledge one\u2019s own mistakes, and courage to take responsibility for one\u2019s judgments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
These are virtues that machines cannot perform on our behalf. They are part of what it means for human beings to mature.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the end, the question is not simply whether we should use AI or avoid it. The real question is: What should we entrust to AI, and what must still be formed within human beings?<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A love for truth, a posture of service toward one\u2019s neighbor, and the capacity to exercise freedom responsibly\u2014these forms of knowledge, habit, and virtue must not be surrendered in exchange for convenience, no matter how powerful technology becomes.
