This beauty is not merely a matter of impression. The psalm is an acrostic poem: each verse begins, in order, with one letter of the Hebrew alphabet\u2014aleph, beth, gimel, and so on, twenty-two letters in all. In Japanese, one might think of the iroha poem to get a sense of the craftsmanship involved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Since the Hebrew alphabet has twenty-two letters, we would expect the psalm to have twenty-two verses. Yet when we count them, there are only twenty-one. After verse 13, the line that should begin with the fourteenth letter, nun (\u05e0), is missing from the Hebrew Bible commonly used today, the Masoretic Text.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. The \u201cLost Line\u201d Preserved in Other Ancient Witnesses<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here the psalm becomes especially interesting. The \u201clost line\u201d has not in fact disappeared entirely. Why Did This Happen? Two Possible Explanations<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are two main explanations for this mystery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>1. The Accidental Omission Theory<\/strong><br>In ancient copying, when similar words occurred close together, a scribe\u2019s eye could sometimes skip from one line to another. Such omissions were not unusual in manuscript transmission.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>2. The Intentional Omission Theory<\/strong><br>Jewish tradition, reflected in the Talmud, notes that a Hebrew word beginning with nun, <em>naphlah<\/em> (\u201chas fallen\u201d), recalls Amos 5:2: \u201cFallen is virgin Israel; she will rise no more.\u201d According to this interpretation, a line beginning with nun may have been deliberately avoided in this psalm of praise because of that negative association.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At the same time, the following verse says, \u201cThe Lord supports all who fall,\u201d so the theme of falling is still woven into the psalm. Scholars have not reached a final agreement on which explanation is correct.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">4. The Place of Psalm 145\u2014David\u2019s Final Song<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This psalm has another face as well. When we consider not only the psalm by itself, but also where it stands within the larger architecture of the 150 Psalms, its resonance becomes deeper.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">First, it is the final psalm bearing David\u2019s name. The voice of David, which begins early in the Psalter and appears again in the sequence from Psalms 138 to 145, comes here to a quiet close.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It also brings to completion the line of acrostic poems scattered throughout the Psalms\u2014Psalms 9, 25, 34, 37, 111, 112, and 119. Psalm 145 is the last of them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Furthermore, Psalm 145 opens the door to Psalms 146\u2013150, the final \u201cHallelujah Psalms,\u201d a fivefold chorus of praise that truly concludes the Psalter. David\u2019s final wish in verse 21\u2014that his mouth would speak the praise of the Lord and that all flesh would bless his holy name\u2014is answered directly by the great \u201cHallelujah\u201d chorus that follows.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In this sense, Psalm 145 is not the finale itself, but the psalm that quietly draws back the curtain for the finale. The praise of one king is handed on to the praise of all creation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">5. Conclusion\u2014How Does This Discussion Affect Interpretation?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some readers may hear this discussion and wonder whether biblical manuscripts are somehow unreliable. In fact, the opposite is true.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The very fact that a difference at the level of one letter and one line can be identified and recorded across more than two thousand years shows how carefully the biblical text has been transmitted. Jewish scribes counted not only words but even letters as they checked their manuscripts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Most importantly, whether this line is included or not, the message of Psalm 145 as a whole does not change. The theme that the Lord is faithful and gracious appears in verse 13, in verse 17, and throughout the psalm. Even if this line was original, it restates an existing theme in different words; it does not add a new doctrine or theological claim.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Therefore, the discussion about the missing nun line is a fascinating issue in textual criticism, but it has no substantial effect on Christian faith or on the basic interpretation of Psalm 145. It is a question that may safely be left open.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is why many Japanese translations, including the New Japanese Bible 2017, follow the Masoretic Text and do not include this line.
