In this first post of Season 6 of our Bible Reading Blog, I\u2019d like to explore the topic of translation, using 1 Samuel chapter 1 as a starting point.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

\u201cA Barren Woman\u201d? Or \u201cA Woman Without Children\u201d?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

In 1 Samuel 1, we meet a woman named Hannah. She is often described in translations as \u201ca barren woman.\u201d But the original Hebrew word \u05e2\u05b2\u05e7\u05b8\u05e8\u05b8\u05d4 (\u02bf\u0103q\u0101r\u0101h)<\/strong> simply means \u201ca woman who does not bear children\u201d or \u201ca woman without children.\u201d It\u2019s a neutral term\u2014not inherently negative or medical.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Throughout the Old Testament, we see stories of women like Sarah, Rebekah, Rachel, Hannah, and Elizabeth\u2014women who receive children through God\u2019s intervention. These stories are powerful symbols of divine reversal<\/strong> and God\u2019s sovereignty in salvation history<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Modern Translation Trends: Inclusive Language<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

In recent years, Bible translators have become more attentive to inclusive language<\/strong>\u2014choosing words that are sensitive to gender and physical conditions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In English, the phrase \u201cbarren woman\u201d<\/strong> is increasingly avoided. Instead, translators prefer expressions like \u201ca woman without children\u201d<\/strong>, which are more neutral and compassionate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This shift aims to preserve the original meaning while being considerate of modern readers\u2019 sensibilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Challenges and Possibilities in Japanese Translation<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

In Japanese, the word \u300c\u4e0d\u598a\u300d (funin)<\/strong> carries medical and social connotations. It can feel harsh or stigmatizing to some readers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That\u2019s why alternatives like \u300c\u5b50\u3092\u6388\u304b\u3063\u3066\u3044\u306a\u304b\u3063\u305f\u5973\u6027\u300d<\/strong> (\u201ca woman who had not yet received a child\u201d) or \u300c\u307e\u3060\u5b50\u3069\u3082\u3092\u6301\u3063\u3066\u3044\u306a\u304b\u3063\u305f\u5973\u6027\u300d<\/strong> (\u201ca woman who did not yet have children\u201d) are being proposed. These expressions are more thoughtful and gentle, while still faithful to the original meaning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The New Japanese Bible Translation and the Work of Translators<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The New Japanese Bible (\u65b0\u6539\u8a33\u8056\u66f8) prioritizes faithfulness to the original text. Its translators carefully study the Hebrew and Greek, choosing words that are both accurate and theologically sound.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When we discuss improving translations, it\u2019s important not to reject existing versions, but to recognize that language evolves<\/strong>, and there\u2019s room for thoughtful revision<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Translation Is Alive<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Translation is not a one-time task. As readers\u2019 language and cultural contexts change, translations must also adapt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
