Historical criticism explains the background. Theological reading helps us live our faith. We should not mix them, but both agree that covenant, obedience, and blessing<\/strong> are important.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The center of Deuteronomy is the covenant<\/strong>. God first chose Israel, loved them, and saved them. In response, the people should love God and obey Him. \u201cLove the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your strength.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n Obeying the law is not just following rules. It is an answer of love<\/strong>. \u201cThe law is not only rules. In 1943, a German scholar, Martin Noth, suggested that the books from Deuteronomy to Kings were edited with one main idea. He called the editor the \u201cDeuteronomistic Historian.\u201d
This historian tried to explain a big question during the Babylonian exile: \u201cWhy did our nation fall?\u201d<\/em> The answer was, \u201cBecause we were not faithful to God\u2019s covenant.\u201d<\/em>
