前回は、詩篇の中に残された礼拝の痕跡について考えました。詩篇には、応答句や祭司による発話、巡礼者と祭司の対話、神殿入場儀礼を思わせる問答など、単なる文学作品では説明しにくい特徴が多数存在します。
こうした観察から、研究者は「詩篇はもともと実際の礼拝で使われていたのではないか」と考えるようになりました。しかし、近年の研究はさらに一歩進んでいます。
もはや問題は「どの祭儀で使われたか」だけではありません。そもそも私たちは、詩篇を読むときに根本的な誤った前提を持っているのではないか。そのような問いが新たに投げかけられています。
1．私たちが聖書を「読む」ということ
現代の私たちは、聖書を「読むもの」として扱っています。静かな場所でページを開き、意味を考え、解釈し、理解しようとします。説教や聖書研究もこの前提に立っています。
しかし古代イスラエルは、まったく異なる文化にありました。当時は識字率が高くなく、個人で巻物を持つことも容易ではありません。そこでテキストは主に声に出して読まれ、人々が聞き、記憶されてきました。つまり、聖書はまず「耳の文化」の中で生きていたのです。
そのため近年の研究者たちは、聖書を「読むテキスト（reading text）」だけではなく、「遂行されるテキスト（performance text）」としても捉えようとしています。

今回は、なぜ近年の詩篇研究で「パフォーマンス・テキスト研究」が重視されるようになったのかを概観しました。しかし本当の面白さは、その視点を実際に聖書テキストへ適用したときに見えてきます。

From the Study of the Psalms to the Study of Lamentations
In the previous essay, we looked at traces of worship preserved in the Psalms. These include repeated responses, speeches by priests, dialogues between pilgrims and priests, and questions that may come from temple entrance ceremonies. Such features are difficult to explain if the Psalms were only literary works.
These observations led scholars to ask whether the Psalms were originally used in actual worship. Recent research, however, goes one step further. The question is no longer only which ceremony used a certain psalm. Scholars also ask whether we begin with a mistaken idea when we read the Psalms.
1. What It Means for Us to “Read” the Bible
Today we treat the Bible as something to read. We open it in a quiet place, think about its meaning, interpret it, and try to understand it. Sermons and Bible studies often begin with this idea.
Ancient Israel belonged to a very different culture. Literacy was not high, and few people could own a scroll. Texts were mainly read aloud, heard by people, and remembered. The Bible first lived in a culture of listening.
For this reason, recent scholars study the Bible not only as a reading text but also as a performance text.

This article has provided an overview of why performance-text studies have become increasingly important in recent Psalms scholarship. The real fascination, however, emerges when this perspective is applied directly to biblical texts themselves.
